Montana Republican proposes state give $8M for border wall

#

Montana's Senate president is proposing the state give more than $8 million to help build President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the Mexican border.

At least one other state, South Dakota, is considering voicing support for Trump's wall. But Montana, which last year faced a massive budget shortfall, appears to be the first to propose spending its own money on the project.

Scott Sales, a Republican, says his proposal is a "small token" to show border security "is of vital interest to all citizens regardless of what state they live in."

House Minority Leader Casey Schreiner, a Democrat, says he'd like to see Sales focus on building Montana's infrastructure.

Trump headed to the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday amid a government shutdown over the $5.7 billion he's seeking for the wall.

I do not think that the Democrats oppose "the wall" because they want cheaper cocaine and heroine

However, any increase in extra-legal immigration increases population numbers
    assigned to a given area

and thus to increased representation in the US House of Representatives....

  • TexasVulcan

Do these people in Montana not realize they are on the Canadian border? Trump has already declared them a "national security risk". I'd be a lot more worried that those clean, polite people may try and infiltrate America. /s

These Republicans are just looney now...

  • transplantwest

NO wall. DUMP TRUMP 2020. VOTE !!!!!

  • HomerIsBlind

If the Wall costs $5.7 Billion and there are 55,000,000 registered Republicans in the US that breaks out to about $103.64 a piece. So come on GOPers, show us how morally superior you think yourselves to be, take up a collection, show those evil lefties what true patriots can do!

  • Samuel Ryan

My thanks to ABC news for not mentioning the phony wall photo op yesterday.

  • FreeYourMind

Presumably he means the Canadian border.

Interesting Montana came in 6th place in 2018 for States most dependent on federal dollars.

Of course Red State Montana is among the many red states which take more money from the federal government than they pay in, while Blue States like New York and California and most blue states in general pay more in to the federal government than they get back.

And yet it's the red states which are constantly bemoaning taxes and welfare and the "Nanny state" and complaining how 'liberals' want the gub'mint to take care of them.

$8 million of the $5 billion Trump wants. That's like adding a few pennies to the change drawer at the convenience store.

  • Sally5

LOL! A border officiall showed trump tunnels under a wall.

  • reality25

    And in related news-

"Veteran behind GoFundMe for Trump's wall allegedly pocketed money meant for wounded veterans"- (The Hil)

No surprises there. Just a Trumper being a Trumper.

  • mtntrek3

No national emergency at the border Donald, except for the one you're trying to create. Border patrol and TSA /others need paid btw.

  • HamburgerHelperAgain

Lots of cattle in Montana. Build the wall with manure.

  • Eteamer

They need to take care of their own border first.

  • kobrakai6868

Montana, the state where every road, bridge and wastewater plant is brand new and where they have the very best education system this planet has ever seen, where every criminal is already in jail, and where drugs are non-existent and where not a single child ever goes to bed hungry. When you are that perfect, you can afford to throw money at a vanity project in a ploy to make political hay by kowtowing to the most bigoted citizens in your state.

  • B-K KnightRider

AND here's another Republican who isn't smart enough to understand that Trump's vanity ego wall is not the only way to provide border security. They sure do love that ridiculous false dilemma.

  • John Smith

Let's claw back some of those tax breaks on corporations and individuals making more than 200,000 to fund Trumps monument to man baby. I bet all the Republicans will jump right on that proposal.
    /smh

  • Kalinysta

What's the old saying? Put your money where your mouth is? So, if Trump is so rich, he should fund his wall with his own money.

  • (((Rocket Cat)))

    "Who's gonna pay for it?"
    "Montana!"

  • kittenpops

Cool..how do you feel about that Montana?

  • Miles

Sponsorship! Sell big ads. Heck Fox News should be good for a billion.

  • Lavendar62

OK Sales, where is the money coming from and what programs have to give up funding to do this so call small token? Is this money that just happens to be lying around, if so, why not give a tax cut to your residents as a small token?

  • B E D G

I can see it now a partially finished wall with graffiti all over it. This is the more ridiculous plan I have ever heard of. Let all these people who want it pay for it out of their own pockets.

  • eastsidemoke

Let's see that will fund about .014 percent of the wall. You better dig a little deeper Mr. Sales.

  • fmd160

Why is it so hard for anyone to understand that the border wall is not the same as border security? Trump uses border security as a euphemism for his ego border wall.

  • Betty Boop

Republicans have went total crazy now!

  • Ayla Windhorse

The red states that throw money at the wall know darn well the Republicans in Congress will repay them somehow. One hand washes the other in Washington and we pay these clowns to run our country. They are running our country right into the ground.

  • David Goldin

I'd like to see Sales run for reelection.

  • mollydtt

Wow. I used to think Montana wasn’t crazy.

  • kritikosman

    Poor Montana.

  • JuPMod

Wow. This guy's state is not on the southern border, yet he wants to donate his state money to help build Trump's Wall despite his state has a budget shortfall? Crazy. Yet if his state want to donate *their* money, they can knock themselves out. Same with any states who want to donate. Just leave the rest of us out of this and just reopen the government.

  • Forward forward

However NONE of the Representatives of the districts that border Mexico support Mr Trump's vanity project.

  • agramonte

There you go... Let whatever random Red State pick up the bill. No reason the rest of us need to pay for this nonsense.

Open the parts of the Gov that have nothing to do with this stupid wall, and get these people payed. They need to pay their bills!

  • crk

Well, knock yourself out Montana and Iowa. Hey, anymore states who want the wall want to chip in? You know what will happen? Trump will change the direction of the money he wants for the wall to the states and then they will give it back to him. Is that kinda like laundering? LOL!

  • CatMom

Why would states so near Canada be afraid of people on our southern border?

  • AWOL WSO

Maybe they should use that money and build a wall around themselves..

  • carcar

Did someone tell them that the wall is for Mexico, not Canada who Montana actually shares a border with...oh..they probably know that

  • Flippykitty

"Tomorrow is payday, but I won't be getting paid, and yet I still want the wall."
    - said no one ever

  • AWOL WSO

Montana's Senate president is proposing the state give more than $8 million to help build President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the Mexican border.

That should leave them with about $1.50 until the end of the year...

  • Your Worst Nightmare

I can't stop laughing. The imbeciles who live furthest away from the border and probably have fewer illegals than polar bears are desperate for a wall. Montana, Wyoming , North and South Dakota are most in favor. I guess they don't make cowboys as tough as they used to be.

But Montana, which last year faced a massive budget shortfall, appears to be the first to propose spending its own money on the project.

What NOT to do to be re-elected.

  • mollydtt

We could use $25 million to toast marshmallows, too.

I live in Texas, and do NOT want a stupid wall.

  • david bogart

Goody, at $25 million a mile that means nothing expect you have money to waste.

  • James R. Paris

Why is it that the ones furthest from the Mexico border are the ones most worried about it? Someone should remind them that most of the 9/11 terrorists came across the CANADA border. They need to watch their backs up there in Montana, the enemy will more likely come from the north.

  • Bayou_Baby27

32 indigenous women have been murdered or gone missing in Montana between January and September of 2018. Scott Sales should be more concerned about helping his own state and passing the Savanna's Act before pledging tax payers money on a wall. Thanks to Jon Tester and Steve Daines for their help & concern.
